Patio Covers

What is a patio cover?

A patio cover is a roof-like structure that’s either freestanding or attached to your home, typically over your patio doors or where another entry door is located. A patio cover is open on the sides, providing shade and protection from sun, rain and snow while also allowing for easy access.

What are the benefits of a patio cover?

Patio covers offer countless benefits, including protection from the elements, cooler temperatures on your patio and indoors, and even improved indoor energy efficiency. Patio covers can also offer storage options for a car, boat, hot tub, and more. Beyond improved exterior aesthetics and a better use of your property, a patio cover can also increase your home value and your enjoyment of your outdoor spaces.

How long does it take to install a patio cover?

Unlike the more complex process of patio enclosure installation, patio covers are generally easier to install. Of course the length will vary on several factors, including the complexity of the design and specific site conditions. That said, anywhere from a few days to a week is a realistic timeline, with most projects falling on the low end of that estimate.

How do I maintain my patio cover?

At Fairview Home Improvement, we work exclusively with patio covers from Joyce Manufacturing Co. LLC. They are crafted using high quality materials and are easily cleaned with mild soap and water.

Can patio covers withstand strong winds and heavy snow?

Our Joyce Manufacturing patio covers are built to last, using thick-gauge, stucco-embossed aluminum that is then coated with an additional protective layer of Krystal Kote® clear finish. They are locally manufactured and able to withstand typical Cleveland weather conditions, including wind and snow. Patio covers range from 3” to 6” thick, depending on local building codes, and can withstand reasonable snow loads.

How long do patio covers last?

Aluminum patio covers typically last longer than vinyl patio covers, roughly double in fact. While a vinyl patio cover may last 10-15 years, you can expect an aluminum patio cover to last 20-30 years. One reason for this is daily exposure to the sun’s UV rays. Joyce Manufacturing’s patio covers do also feature a layer of Krystal Kote® clear finish for added protection. Their Climatemaster roof system comes with a lifetime warranty, so whatever happens during its typical lifespan, you have recourse.

Patio Enclosures

What is a patio enclosure?

A patio enclosure is essentially an additional room-like structure for your home that builds walls and infrastructure around your patio. A patio enclosure typically includes screens or glass panels as well, so that you can enjoy the sun and sights of the great outdoors without enduring the associated insects and bad weather. This fully enclosed space provides the ultimate protection from the elements, while still allowing you to feel as though you’re outside.

What are the different types of patio enclosures?

Patio enclosures can be built to suit your preferences. You can opt for a screened room that uses mesh screens to keep insects and other critters out, while allowing birdsong and fresh breeze in. Glass patio enclosures include large glass panels for enhanced protection from weather and a clearer view. Another option is called a three season room. This structure incorporates all the amenities you need to create an indoor-like space that you can comfortably use during spring, summer and fall. Some patio enclosures can also be custom built so that you can enjoy them year round.

What materials are used for patio enclosures?

You can find patio enclosures that are made using an array of materials. At Fairview Home Improvement we only recommend PVC vinyl patio enclosures due to their durability, weatherproof seal, and seamless integration of utility access. We exclusively offer Joyce Manufacturing patio enclosures and recommend their products because they are resistant to rotting, chips, and corrosion and feature natural insulation from the vinyl itself. You can work with our team to choose the color, window, door and glass options that best fit your preferences and lifestyle.

How do I clean and maintain my patio enclosure?

In general, a mild, non-abrasive cleaner and a soft cloth or sponge are adequate to clean windows and surfaces. A gentle, soft-bristle brush can be used to remove debris and dust from screens prior to washing.

How long do patio enclosures last?

With the proper maintenance and care, a well-built patio enclosure–like what Joyce Manufacturing offers–can last for several decades. Warranties may also apply, should something happen. In the end, the lifespan of any patio enclosure will depend on the materials used, the quality of the construction, maintenance and local weather conditions.

Patio Covers & Patio Enclosures

Is a patio cover or patio enclosure worth it?

In a word–yes! Not only do both patio covers and patio enclosures add usable, liveable space to your home, they also add resale value if you should ever want or need to relocate. These protective structures also allow your home’s HVAC system to operate more efficiently, as they keep strong sun rays from entering the home. Other property, like the patio itself along with any furniture, is also preserved longer under a patio cover or enclosure than if it were to sit exposed to the elements. On top of everything, the wellbeing you can derive from time spent outside alone or with family and friends makes the addition worthwhile.

Are permits required to install patio covers or patio enclosures in Cleveland?

Since both patio covers and patio enclosures are structures, most localities will require a building permit prior to construction. Your local building department can provide a solid answer for you, and if you are within Fairview Home Improvement’s service area, we can likely also offer more details on your township’s requirements. If you live in an HOA, you will need to contact the board to inquire, but it is likely that you will need to submit a plan of some kind.
